Why Highway Pedestrian Crashes Often Turn Fatal
Pedestrian crashes on highways tend to be especially severe due to higher vehicle speeds and limited safe crossing points. At these speeds, drivers often have very little time to react when a person enters the roadway.
Visibility also plays a major role, particularly on multi-lane highways where vehicles may block a driver’s view of pedestrians. Even when drivers are attentive, the combination of speed and distance can make avoiding a collision difficult.
Following these types of crashes, investigators commonly review roadway design, lighting, and crossing access points. They may also analyze vehicle positioning and sightlines to better understand how the collision occurred and what factors contributed to the outcome.
