Maryville, MO (May 13, 2025) – A three-vehicle collision involving drivers from Missouri and Iowa occurred Sunday evening just north of Maryville, sending all three motorists to the hospital. The crash happened around 6:08 p.m. on May 11 at the intersection of Missouri Route 148 and US Highway 71, approximately half a mile north of the city.
The incident began when a 1997 Ford Ranger, driven by a 66-year-old man from Lenox, Iowa, stopped at a posted stop sign while eastbound on Jade Road. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the driver then failed to yield to a northbound 2018 Dodge Durango on US-71. The Durango struck the Ford’s passenger side, and the force of the crash caused both vehicles to collide with a third vehicle—a 2007 Kia Spectra—that had been stopped at another posted sign on westbound MO-148.
All three vehicles sustained moderate damage and had to be towed from the scene. Emergency crews from the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryville Police Department assisted at the site.
The driver of the Durango, a 40-year-old woman from Maryville, was transported by Nodaway County Ambulance to Mosaic Medical Center with injuries. The Ford Ranger driver also suffered injuries and was taken to the same hospital by private vehicle. The driver of the Kia, a 70-year-old man from Hopkins, MO, was treated for moderate injuries and transported by ambulance.
We extend our best wishes for a swift and full recovery to all involved in this crash.
Intersection Collisions and Right-of-Way Dangers in Missouri
Intersection crashes, like Sunday’s incident just north of Maryville, are among the most common and hazardous types of traffic accidents. This collision involved three separate vehicles that each approached a rural intersection governed by stop signs, yet a momentary failure to yield resulted in a chain-reaction crash with multiple injuries.
The intersection of MO-148 and US-71 lies just outside Maryville and serves as a key connector for local and regional traffic. Though traffic controls are in place, rural intersections often lack additional safety features like dedicated turn lanes, lighting, or visibility enhancements, making right-of-way violations more likely, particularly when drivers are unfamiliar with the area.
In this case, all involved drivers were wearing seat belts, which likely helped reduce the severity of injuries. Still, one motorist suffered moderate trauma and required ambulance transport. Multi-vehicle collisions can often be confusing for victims, not only due to the physical shock but because determining liability may involve multiple insurance providers and varying accounts of the event.
Crashes at intersections emphasize the importance of defensive driving and the need for clear decision-making when entering major highways. Even a single miscalculation, such as the failure to yield described here, can lead to serious consequences for all parties involved.
If you or someone you love has been injured in a similar crash, it’s important to seek both medical evaluation and guidance to ensure your rights and recovery needs are protected.
