McCurtain County, OK (December 9, 2024) – A devastating crash early Sunday morning in McCurtain County resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The collision occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. on US-259, about nine miles southeast of Idabel, when a minivan, driven by 35-year-old Mathew Williston of DeKalb, Texas, crossed the center line on a curve and collided head-on with a pickup truck.
Williston and the driver of the pickup, 21-year-old Antonio Dzieglo of Bullhead City, Arizona, were both killed in the crash. Two adult passengers in the minivan were injured and were treated at a local hospital. Tragically, none of the individuals in either vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) is investigating the cause of the accident. At this time, there is no indication of alcohol or drug involvement, but troopers are continuing to gather information to understand what led to the crash. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of seat belt use, especially in high-risk situations such as head-on collisions.
As the investigation continues, the OHP is focusing on determining whether other factors, such as speeding, distracted driving, or road conditions, played a role in this tragic event. However, the key takeaway for all drivers remains the same: the importance of remaining vigilant on the road, obeying traffic laws, and using safety devices to minimize risk.
Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic loss.
Fatal Accidents in Oklahoma
Fatal crashes like the one that occurred in McCurtain County are a tragic part of the road safety challenges faced by Oklahomans. In this case, the minivan crossed the center line, a dangerous maneuver that led to a fatal collision. Such accidents often occur on curves and turns, where drivers may lose sight of oncoming traffic or misjudge the road conditions.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol statistics consistently show that head-on collisions, especially on rural highways, are one of the leading causes of fatal accidents. The lack of seat belt use in this crash highlights the importance of safety measures in preventing fatal injuries.
