Merrick County, NE (October 24, 2024) – A tragic two-vehicle crash occurred Wednesday morning, resulting in one fatality and serious injuries to another individual. At approximately 10:30 a.m., deputies from the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the accident on Highway 14 near U Road in a rural area of the county.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of an SUV, traveling northbound on Highway 14, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound pickup truck. The driver of the SUV, identified as 46-year-old Ryan Peery from Cass County, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities reported that Peery was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to Merrick Medical Center before being transported to a hospital in Omaha for further treatment. Fortunately, this driver was wearing a seat belt, and airbags deployed in both vehicles during the collision.
Emergency services, including the Nebraska State Patrol, Nance County Sheriff’s Office, Clarks Fire & Rescue, Central City Ambulance, and Central City Fire Department, assisted at the scene. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
