Murray, UT (April 25, 2025) – Authorities are investigating a suspected hit-and-run that seriously injured two Utah Transit Authority (UTA) employees early Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. near the 5900 South rail crossing, where the workers were exiting a rail vehicle when they were struck by an eastbound white SUV.
According to UTA spokesman Gavin Gustafson, both employees were hospitalized, with one in critical condition and the other in serious condition. The critically injured worker was rushed into surgery for what Gustafson described as a life-threatening situation.
After the crash, the driver of the SUV reportedly fled the scene on foot, and as of this report, authorities have not yet located the suspect. The Murray Police Department is leading the investigation and is working to identify and apprehend the individual responsible.
We extend our deepest concerns and best wishes to both injured employees and their families, and we hope for a full and swift recovery.
Hit-and-Runs Involving Transit Workers in Utah
Crashes involving transit employees, especially those occurring on or near active rail lines, are particularly concerning due to the inherent risks of working in low-light, high-traffic environments. Transit workers face unique dangers—especially at night—when visibility is low and vehicle operators may not expect to encounter personnel on foot.
The area surrounding the 5900 South rail crossing includes a mix of industrial and commuter routes, and while UTA maintenance teams are highly trained in safety protocols, they remain vulnerable during transitions between vehicles and railways.
Hit-and-run collisions are considered felonies in Utah, especially when they result in serious bodily harm. Fleeing the scene not only delays critical medical assistance but also deepens the trauma for victims and their families. Law enforcement agencies prioritize these investigations, and community assistance can often be vital in locating suspects.
Victims of serious pedestrian crashes may face extended hospitalization, lost income, and lasting physical and emotional injuries. In such cases, early access to legal counsel, trauma support, and workplace injury benefits can make a substantial difference in the path to recovery.
