New Paltz, NY (January 29, 2023) – A woman identified as Darleen B. Halwick, 63, from Hurley lost her life in a traffic accident involving a tractor-trailer in New Paltz. The collision took place at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, January 28.
Reports from authorities show the woman’s vehicle collided with a semi-truck about three miles north of the New Paltz exit on the New York State Thruway. The tractor-trailer was headed south when it was struck from behind by Halwick’s Toyota Avalon.
The semi-truck driver, identified as Carlos L. Nunes, 43, pulled over to the right shoulder of the thruway to inspect his vehicle. He discovered Halwick’s Avalon lodged underneath the trailer. The vehicle was significantly damaged.
Halwick, the only person inside the vehicle at the time, was pronounced deceased on-site by the Ulster County medical examiner.
Authorities in New Paltz continue to investigate the details of the crash.
