Amenia, NY (October 10, 2020) – A two-vehicle collision in Dutchess County that resulted in the death of a small child took place on Thursday, October 8th.
According to a statement issued by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at about 8:20 a.m. along Route 22 in the town of Amenia.
A police report indicates that a 2018 Nissan Sentra, driven by 26-year-old Reneisha Johnson, a resident of Millerton, was heading southbound on Route 22 when she stopped in traffic when she noticed a car trying to make a turn.
At that time, a 2000 Ford Explorer driven by 73-year-old Forrest McBreairty, a resident of Amenia, hit the Nissan from behind after neglecting to realize it had stopped.
Johnson and her only passenger, Ellie Dunlop, 2, were both seriously injured and were transported via ambulance to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital. The pair were later airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. The two-year-old died a short while later.
Officials stated that sun glare and driver distraction are believed to be contributing factors in the accident.
This ongoing investigation is being handled by the Crash Investigation Unit and the sheriff’s office Detective Bureau. As of now, no charges have been filed.
The Amenia Fire Department and the New York State Police also assisted at the accident site.
