Latham, NY – Jennifer Moran Killed in Fire Incident on George St

Rochester, NY – Firefighter Injured Responding to Call on Ketchum St

Rochester, NY (November 14, 2020) – A fire that broke out at an abandoned house in Rochester on Wednesday, November 11th caused injuries to one of the firefighters on the scene.

At about 8:55 p.m., members of the Rochester Fire Department were dispatched to Ketchum Street after receiving reports of flames erupting from the vacant, boarded-up residence. While firefighters were attempting to contain the blaze, a portion of the one-and-a-half story home collapsed, striking one firefighter in the head.

The injured firefighter was transported via ambulance to Highland Hospital for emergency treatment.

Officials reported that the firefighters were able to contain the blaze but as the abandoned residence had no gas or electric service, investigators are still uncertain what caused the fire.

Line-of-Duty Injuries in Rochester

Rochester, NY - Firefighter Injured Responding to Call on Ketchum St

Generally speaking, an employee who is eligible to receive worker’s compensation benefits for an injury they sustained while on the job is prohibited from suing their employer for those same work-related injuries. New York firefighters who suffer injuries in the line of duty, however, are not eligible to collect workers’ compensation. Their hospital bills and lost income are handled by the city that employs them. In other words, because New York firefighters are not afforded the protection of worker’s compensation, they do have the right to bring a claim of personal injury against their employer for injuries they received during a line-of-duty accident in New York.

Being seriously injured in an accident of any kind can be a very disruptive, frightening, confusing, and overwhelming time in a person’s life.
