Washington Heights, NY (September 29, 2020) – A five-year-old girl is among twelve people who were rescued from a burning building that left a total of at least nine injured. The incident was reported early on Tuesday morning, September 29th, on West 158th Street.

Authorities with the Fire Department of New York say that a fire broke out in an apartment building located between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights at around 4:30 a.m. More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze that originated inside a unit on the fifth floor, according to officials.

Multiple residents were trapped on the sixth floor and fire crews worked to help a total of twelve people escape the flames by lowering them out through the windows. EMTs with the FDNY transported at least nine people to area hospitals with various injuries.

One person was listed in critical condition as another four suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Four others sustained at least minor injuries during the fire but there has been no word on the current conditions of those involved.

The fire is currently believed to have been caused by an overloaded extension cord but the investigation is ongoing.
