Norfolk, VA (March 12, 2025) – A residential fire early Wednesday morning in Norfolk left one person with life-threatening injuries and sent three police officers to the hospital for smoke-related treatment.
Fire crews were dispatched to the 8000 block of Galveston Blvd at approximately 1:48 a.m. Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the home. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive attack on the fire while searching for occupants inside.
One victim, identified by neighbors as a 16-year-old Granby High School student, was trapped on the second floor and unable to escape due to the fire blocking the stairway. Firefighters successfully rescued the individual, who was then transported to the hospital with severe injuries.
Three Norfolk Police officers who attempted to rescue the victim before firefighters arrived were overcome by smoke and heat. They were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
According to neighbors, four people were inside the house at the time of the fire, including the mother, her two daughters, and a friend of the eldest daughter. The fire was brought under control by 2:27 a.m., and officials are now investigating the cause of the blaze.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family, and we hope for a full recovery for all affected.
