Watford City, ND (July 15, 2020) – A two-year child was accidentally run over by a pickup truck who was backing out of a driveway in Watford City on the night of July 13th. The young boy died as a result of his injuries. A responding police cruiser then collided with a woman who was driving in her vehicle
North Dakota Highway Patrol indicated that the initial fatal pedestrian accident was reported at approximately 8:07 pm.
Authorities stated that a 50-year-old man named Otis Robers from Watford City entered his vehicle described as a 2012 Dodge Ram. He was intending to move his truck when he struck the young toddler with the front of his truck and proceeded to run the young boy over. The child was dragged by the truck for about 15 feet before Roberts realized that something wasn’t right and discovered the child beneath his vehicle. He stopped as soon as he noticed.
The child suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of the accident and was immediately transported to McKenzie County Healthcare. The child did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital.
A second incident took place when a 30-year-old police officer, Zackary Moran, employed by the McKenzie County Sheriff Department was responding to the fatal pedestrian accident involving the toddler when he crashed into a vehicle at 12th Street NE at the Fourth Avenue NE Intersection. Officer Moran had a red light at the intersection at the time of the crash and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Officer Moran was operating a 2016 Chevy Tahoe when he collided with a 2020 Kia Optima. The 34-year-old Fargo woman sustained very serious injuries that were deemed to be life-threatening. The woman was subsequently life-flighted to Trinity Hospital located in Minot for further treatment of her injuries.
The officer did have his lights and sirens on at that he entered the intersection. The female driver had a green light at the time of the collision and was wearing a seatbelt when her vehicle rolled into a ditch.
This accident is currently being investigated by NDHP.
