North Texas, TX (May 24, 2025) – A 19-year-old woman was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver Thursday night in a tragic highway crash that also involved multiple parked vehicles. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. along US 277 near Ramhorn Hill Road, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The pedestrian, identified as Destiny Quintanilla of Grand Prairie, was standing near a parked Toyota Camry on the shoulder of the highway when a Jeep Grand Cherokee hit her. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 58-year-old Alan Schutt of Boyd, also collided with a second parked vehicle, a 2009 Honda Accord, during the incident. Officials stated that Schutt attempted to flee the scene on foot but was taken into custody by authorities a short time later.
The driver of the Camry was transported to a hospital for treatment and was later released. Following further investigation, state troopers determined that Schutt was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Destiny Quintanilla during this heartbreaking time.
Addressing the Toll of DUI Crashes on Texas Highways
Texas has long grappled with the consequences of impaired driving, particularly on high-speed highways like US 277, where the margin for error is slim. Crashes involving intoxicated drivers are among the most deadly, especially when pedestrians or parked vehicles are involved.
In rural and suburban parts of North Texas, where stretches of highway often lack lighting or shoulder protections, any pedestrian presence becomes high-risk. In this case, the tragedy was compounded by the driver’s attempt to flee and his confirmed impairment—both aggravating factors that highlight systemic challenges in traffic enforcement and personal responsibility.
According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation, thousands of alcohol-related crashes occur each year, with a significant portion resulting in fatalities. Despite increased awareness, enforcement campaigns, and public education, impaired driving continues to devastate families across the state.
Pedestrians near roadways—whether due to breakdowns, emergencies, or stops—should be particularly cautious. Whenever possible, individuals should stay inside disabled vehicles with hazard lights activated or move far from traffic lanes. However, even the most careful choices can be rendered moot by the actions of reckless or impaired drivers.
This crash is a tragic example of how one driver’s decision can alter lives forever. Legal accountability will now follow, but the emotional toll for those left behind is immeasurable.
