Oakland, CA (August 4, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle crash with major injuries occurred Sunday morning on eastbound State Route 24 just west of the Old Tunnel Rd off-ramp, leaving at least one person hospitalized and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The crash was first reported at approximately 7:37 AM and involved at least three vehicles, including a white Tesla, a dark-colored Tesla, and a black Nissan Altima. Initial reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that one of the vehicles struck the center divider and came to rest perpendicular in the #1 lane. A female occupant of the Nissan was found unresponsive and folded over the center console, with her legs still at the steering wheel and the doors locked. Emergency responders were prepared to break the window to reach her safely.
Oakland Fire and medical personnel arrived quickly, with one victim—identified in logs as “LN Montez”—transported by Falk Ambulance to Highland Hospital with major head injuries. The presence of a child seat was also noted inside one of the vehicles, though it remains unclear if a child was inside at the time of the crash.
All lanes on the eastbound side were temporarily closed as responders worked the scene, but lanes reopened after about 45 minutes. Two vehicles were towed from the crash site, and investigators began reviewing traffic camera footage to determine if another black vehicle seen speeding through the Caldecott Tunnel may have been involved.
We send our deepest wishes for recovery to the injured victim and hope for healing and support for all affected.
High-Injury Freeway Crashes in the Oakland Hills
Major injury crashes like the one on SR-24 near Old Tunnel Rd highlight the dangers of high-speed collisions on hilly, winding freeway corridors. In this part of Oakland, the Caldecott Tunnel and surrounding merges frequently see rapid changes in speed and tight traffic conditions that create a high risk for multi-vehicle incidents.
This crash involved significant impact forces, vehicle entrapment, and trauma—conditions often associated with elevated speeds or sudden lane maneuvers. In such incidents, first responders must navigate not just traffic control, but also the need for vehicle extrication and urgent medical aid.
Injury victims in major freeway collisions often face long-term consequences beyond the initial impact. Head trauma, orthopedic injuries, and emotional distress can take weeks or months to recover from. Additionally, the presence of locked doors or difficult vehicle positioning can delay aid, which increases risk.
