Oakland, CA (May 13, 2025) – A motorcyclist was injured in a traffic collision Sunday evening on westbound Interstate 80 at the University Avenue off-ramp. The crash, which occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m., involved at least two vehicles and prompted a significant emergency response from CHP and Berkeley Fire personnel.
CHP dispatchers initially received reports of a motorcycle down in the lanes, with the rider thrown from the bike. Witnesses at the scene stopped to assist as the injured rider was found in lane 3 of the freeway. Responding crews confirmed the rider had sustained injuries, leading to the incident being classified as a crash with injuries (1181-COP). Emergency medical services provided aid at the scene.
According to eyewitness accounts, a silver Honda Civic may have cut off the motorcycle, leading to the crash. The Honda was later confirmed as a suspect vehicle in the hit-and-run (20002), and its license plate—7XDM604—was documented by witnesses. The vehicle was eventually entered into the state system as part of the ongoing investigation.
Traffic lanes were partially blocked for an extended period, with fire personnel managing safety in lane 1, and the damaged blue motorcycle was ultimately towed from the scene by Berry Brothers Towing.
Law enforcement activity continued into the evening, with several officers coordinating on follow-up investigations. At one point, contacts were made with the Alameda County Juvenile Hall regarding one of the involved parties, though further details have not yet been disclosed.
The rider’s condition has not been released at this time, but the level of response suggests moderate to serious injuries. CHP continues to investigate the cause of the crash and the potential role of the Honda Civic driver in triggering the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured rider, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Motorcycle Collisions in the Bay Area
Crashes involving motorcycles remain a major safety concern across the Bay Area, particularly on high-speed interstates like I-80. Sunday’s crash near the University Ave off-ramp highlights the dangers riders face when navigating through congested freeway exits, where sudden lane changes and aggressive driving can lead to devastating consequences.
Motorcycle riders are significantly more vulnerable in crashes, even at lower speeds. Without the protection of an enclosed vehicle, they rely on defensive riding, visibility, and the attentiveness of surrounding drivers to remain safe. Unfortunately, incidents like this—especially when involving a possible hit-and-run—underscore the importance of accountability and rapid response.
Drivers must always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes, particularly near exits and interchanges. Meanwhile, motorcyclists are encouraged to wear high-visibility gear and maintain a safe following distance to allow time to react to unpredictable traffic patterns.
If you or someone you care about has been injured in a motorcycle crash, immediate medical attention, thorough documentation, and timely legal advice are all critical. Investigations often hinge on eyewitness reports, vehicle damage, and surveillance footage, which can help victims seek justice and compensation.
