Obetz, OH (April 25, 2025) – A pedestrian was left in critical condition Tuesday night after being struck by a semitruck while crossing Alum Creek Drive near Groveport Road, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. The crash occurred just before 9:20 p.m. and remains under investigation.
Authorities say the collision involved a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling southbound on Alum Creek Drive under a green traffic light when a man began to cross the road. The driver, unaware that a collision had occurred, continued down the road before stopping and calling 911 to report a possible incident.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the injured pedestrian to Grant Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. Officials have not yet released the man’s identity.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit is actively seeking additional information and is asking any witnesses to come forward.
Our thoughts are with the injured man and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
Pedestrian-Vehicle Collisions in Ohio
Collisions involving pedestrians and large commercial vehicles are among the most devastating incidents on Ohio roadways. Tractor trailers, like the Freightliner involved in Tuesday night's crash, carry massive momentum and limited visibility, making it extremely difficult to avoid impact once a pedestrian enters their path—especially at night.
In this case, early indications suggest the truck was operating lawfully through a green light when the man began to cross Alum Creek Drive. It remains unclear whether the pedestrian was within a designated crosswalk or visible to the truck driver, but this incident underscores the high risk pedestrians face on busy roadways, particularly at intersections and after dark.
Semitruck drivers often report delayed awareness in pedestrian crashes due to the size and noise of their vehicles, and in this case, the driver only became aware of the situation after continuing down the road. Situations like these highlight the need for improved pedestrian visibility, better intersection lighting, and proactive public awareness efforts about crosswalk safety.
Obetz and the greater Franklin County area have seen similar incidents in recent years, prompting renewed discussions around pedestrian infrastructure and safety enhancements. Whether it’s extended crossing signals, better signage, or community education, a multi-faceted approach is key to preventing tragedies.
For families affected by pedestrian accidents, the recovery process is often long and emotionally taxing. From intensive medical care and rehabilitation to legal and financial considerations, having access to timely and accurate information can be crucial in navigating what comes next.
