Phelps, NY (May 10, 2023) – A tractor-trailer and car collision at the intersection of County Road 6 and County Road 23 in Phelps left three people with serious injuries. The accident occurred on Tuesday morning, May 9th, at around 8:02 a.m.
The Oaks Corners Fire Department and Phelps Ambulance received a call to the scene. Reports initially indicated that someone was trapped, prompting the rescue from the Phelps FD. Oaks Corners Engine 3211, Heavy Rescue 3271, and Squad 3261 also responded under the direction of Chief Zachery Rey.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered three occupants in the passenger car. No one was trapped, but one patient was semi-conscious. Finger Lakes Ambulance and Mercy Flight were called, and three medevac helicopters were dispatched to the scene.
Although the patients were not trapped, firefighters removed one door from the vehicle to improve patient access. They also handled a gasoline leak from the car, and a long-duration road closure was necessary for the cleanup and investigation.
Due to varying response times for the helicopters, two additional landing zones were established along Finger Lakes Ambulance’s routes to Strong Memorial Hospital for Lifenet helicopters. Manchester FD created a landing zone at Thruway Exit 43, while Fishers FD set up another landing zone at Exit 45. The Phelps FD established a landing zone for Mercy Flight at the Oaks Corners Community Park.
As of writing, injuries have been reported as serious but not life-threatening.
The events that led to the collision are under investigation.
We extend our best wishes to those injured and hope for their speedy recovery.
