Pokagon Township, MI (April 20, 2025) – Seven people, including five children, were injured Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Pokagon Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of M-51 and Crystal Springs Street.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. Authorities say a northbound vehicle on M-51 rear-ended another car carrying two men and five children. All seven occupants of the impacted vehicle were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
In a concerning development, investigators reported that none of the five children in the struck vehicle were wearing seatbelts or properly secured in child safety restraints at the time of the crash. This has raised serious safety concerns and will be a key component of the ongoing investigation.
The vehicle that caused the crash remained at the scene, and no further details have been released regarding possible charges or citations.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, particularly the children involved, and we hope for their full recovery.
Rear-End Collisions in Cass County
Rear-end collisions are among the most frequent types of crashes on Michigan’s highways and rural roads. Routes like M-51, which connect local communities across Cass County, can become hazardous due to sudden stops, distracted driving, and insufficient following distance.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), proper use of seatbelts and child safety restraints significantly reduces the risk of injury or death in traffic collisions. Michigan law requires that children be secured in age- and size-appropriate restraints, and violations can result in serious consequences—especially when injuries are involved.
In crashes involving children, the emotional and physical toll can be immense. Beyond the immediate medical care, families may face long-term recovery challenges and legal considerations tied to liability and passenger safety violations.
