Poplar Bluff, MO (May 13, 2025) – A mid-afternoon collision on Monday along Highway B in Butler County left one man injured and two vehicles moderately damaged in a right-of-way incident near the town of Qulin.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:21 p.m. about 9 miles east of Poplar Bluff. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2003 Nissan Versa was traveling southbound when its driver, a 26-year-old woman from Qulin, failed to yield at a junction along the rural stretch of Hwy B. Her vehicle entered the path of a westbound 2015 Nissan Sentra driven by a 41-year-old man from Fisk.
The impact caused moderate damage to both vehicles. The Versa was removed by Barker’s Wrecker, while the Sentra was cleared by Chaffins Wrecker Service. Despite both drivers being properly restrained, the male driver of the Sentra sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Officials on the scene conducted traffic control while clearing debris and collecting preliminary evidence. The female driver was reportedly uninjured, and no citations or arrests have been announced at this time. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the failure to yield, which triggered the collision.
We extend our thoughts to the injured man and hope for a swift and complete recovery.
Right-of-Way Collisions in Missouri
Accidents involving failure to yield are among the most common—and preventable—on Missouri’s rural highways. Monday’s crash near Qulin serves as a cautionary example of how a single misjudgment at an intersection can disrupt lives in seconds.
In this incident, a southbound vehicle reportedly entered Hwy B without yielding to oncoming westbound traffic, resulting in a significant impact. Even with seatbelts in use, the 41-year-old Fisk man driving the struck vehicle required hospital care, emphasizing the serious nature of moderate-speed rural crashes.
Highway B, like many state routes in Butler County, features numerous unsignaled intersections, making it especially critical for drivers to adhere to right-of-way rules and maintain constant vigilance. Many of these intersections are located in low-visibility zones, where trees, terrain, or lack of signage can contribute to delayed decision-making.
The failure to yield often stems from distractions, misjudged distances, or simple driver inattention—factors that continue to be leading causes in Missouri’s annual crash reports. The Missouri Department of Transportation has identified rural roadway safety as a key priority, as these areas account for a disproportionately high number of injury and fatality crashes.
Drivers in the Poplar Bluff region are urged to exercise caution, particularly when entering or crossing major routes like Hwy B. Slowing down, taking an extra moment to check for oncoming vehicles, and respecting right-of-way laws can prevent tragedies and reduce strain on emergency responders in already under-resourced areas.
For individuals injured in such incidents, recovery can involve not just physical healing but also navigating insurance claims, vehicle losses, and emotional stress. Having accurate crash documentation and access to supportive resources is essential in these cases.
