Potsdam, NY (December 18, 2024) – Two prominent residents of Massena lost their lives in a tragic motor vehicle crash Tuesday evening in the town of Potsdam. The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department reported the accident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at the intersection of State Highway 310 and County Route 34.
According to initial investigations, a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Ogdensburg native Connor Graveline, was traveling eastbound on County Route 34 when it failed to stop at a stop sign. The vehicle subsequently collided with a 2022 GMC Acadia driven by Real Coupal. Tragically, both Coupal and his passenger, Loretta Perez, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Coupal, affectionately known as “Frenchie,” was a respected figure in Massena, owning Frenchie’s Ford and Frenchie’s Chevrolet car dealerships. Perez was a dedicated educator and active community member in the Massena school district. Both were deeply involved in numerous local organizations and will be greatly missed.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Police, and fire departments from West Potsdam, Canton, and Madrid, were quick to arrive. Medics provided care to those impacted by the crash. The New York State Department of Transportation also assisted on-site. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
