Poultney, VT (December 3, 2024) – A fatal head-on collision occurred Monday evening on College Street North in Rutland County, resulting in the death of 68-year-old James Mullaney of Poultney. Vermont State Police reported that Mullaney was driving northbound when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the double yellow line and crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle. The crash took place around 6:30 PM.
Mullaney, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was declared dead at the scene. The other driver, a 23-year-old woman from Hampton, New York, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Both vehicles involved in the crash were totaled.
Emergency responders from Poultney Fire Department, Poultney Rescue, Granville Rescue, Hampton Fire Department, and Poultney Town Highway assisted at the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
