Queens, NY (May 15, 2023) – In the early hours of May 15th, around 4:48 a.m., a two-alarm fire engulfed a residential structure on 142nd Street.
Firefighters quickly responded to the 911 emergency call, arriving at the scene to find flames raging on both the first and second floors, as well as in the basement.
The firefighters diligently ensured the safe evacuation of all occupants from the building. However, as the situation unfolded, it became clear that the fire had also spread to the roof. To assess the situation better, they attempted a thorough search of the building, but the hazardous conditions hindered their progress. As a result, the firefighters requested assistance from the gas and electric company.
The fire continued to persist, and at 7:06:59 a.m., a Citizen user captured footage of firefighters extinguishing the flames with water. The severity of the incident prompted the presence of police, ambulances, and fire trucks across multiple blocks in South Ozone Park. Fortunately, the firefighters were able to bring the fire under control shortly after and requested additional units to relieve those who had been battling the flames.
Sadly, during this harrowing fire, two firefighters sustained injuries and received prompt medical attention from the emergency services on the scene.
We hope for their speedy recovery.
