Queens, NY (February 20, 2021) – Edwin Vargas, a 43-year-old car wash worker from Queens, has been charged with drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter for allegedly hitting and killing a woman picking up her car while he was under the influence.
Vargas tested for a blood-alcohol level of .115%, well over the .08% legal limit, after he drove a vehicle off the line and struck 54-year-old Tracy McManus as she walked toward her freshly cleaned car at the Crossbay Car Wash and Lube at the corner of Desarc Road and Crossbay Boulevard in Ozone Park on Monday, February 15th.
Sources stated that the fatal accident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. McManus had just tipped the employees who cleaned her Ford Escape and was walking toward it when Vargas, who was driving another customer’s 2011 Jeep Liberty, slammed into her.
McManus was transported via ambulance to Jamacia Hospital where she died of her injuries.
