Redding, CA (May 13, 2025) – A collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist left one person injured Sunday morning on State Route 299 near the 21272 block in the Redding area. The crash occurred at approximately 10:52 a.m. and triggered a multi-agency emergency response including Shasta County Fire, SHASCOM, and local EMS.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s initial reports, the bicyclist was found down in the middle of the roadway following the impact. While the exact make and model of the striking vehicle were not immediately confirmed, the vehicle was later observed parked a short distance away from the collision site. It remains unclear whether the driver remained at the scene or left prior to CHP’s arrival.
Medical personnel arrived promptly and treated the injured bicyclist before clearing the roadway, which had been temporarily blocked in both directions. A riding companion took possession of the e-bike following the crash, suggesting the cyclist was not alone at the time of the incident.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and the roadway was cleared by approximately 11:40 a.m. A formal CHP crash report (180 form) was not filed, possibly due to the nature of the injuries or cooperation between the involved parties.
We extend our best wishes to the injured cyclist for a swift and full recovery.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Incidents on Rural California Highways
Cyclists traveling along rural stretches of SR-299 face unique risks, particularly in areas with limited shoulder space, narrow lanes, and variable visibility. The region near Redding is known for its scenic routes and popular cycling paths, but it also presents challenges due to fast-moving traffic and limited escape routes for non-motorized road users.
Sunday’s crash underscores the importance of vigilance for both drivers and cyclists, especially in areas where motor vehicles and bikes share the same roadway without dedicated lanes. Drivers must maintain safe passing distances and remain alert to bicyclists, especially when approaching curves or crests that reduce line-of-sight visibility.
For cyclists, wearing high-visibility gear, using front and rear lights even during daylight hours, and riding single file can significantly reduce the risk of collisions. Additionally, having a riding partner—as in this case—can be invaluable in securing assistance and facilitating immediate communication with emergency responders.
When injury crashes occur, victims often require ongoing medical care and support while navigating insurance claims or liability issues. Even in non-fatal incidents, the trauma and financial burden can be significant.
