Reno, NV (September 18, 2023) – Two pilots lost their lives in a tragic mid-air collision at the National Championship Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport on Sunday, September 17, 2023.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that a North American T-6G and an AT-6B clashed around 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Efforts to notify the deceased pilots’ families are underway.
Debris landed in two locations west of the airport, but no civilians sustained injuries.
Following the accident, all subsequent races were canceled.
Notably, Sunday marked the end of the six-decade-long Reno air race tradition, previously decided due to safety and development concerns.
The National Transportation Safety Board now leads the investigation. The investigation is still ongoing.
