Richmond, VA – 10-Year-Old Child Dies from Undiagnosed Illness

Richmond, VA (February 9, 2021) – On January 26, a 10-year-old boy who attended the Overby-Sheppard Elementary School fell ill while at home. The boy had a sore throat and a loss of appetite.

Due to his sudden onset of symptoms, his mother brought him to the VCU Medical Center where he was seen in the emergency room. While at the hospital, the young boy was tested for strep throat and COVID-19. Both tests came back negative. The child was then sent home with Tylenol without any further testing.

The next morning, the young boy’s mother went to wake him up, but he was unresponsive. She called 911 immediately. The young boy was admitted into the hospital, where he passed away three days later.

It was later discovered that the young boy passed away from a diabetic coma. At this time, investigations surrounding the cause of death are ongoing.
