Ridge Township, OH (December 9, 2024) – A multi-injury crash occurred at the intersection of Mendon Rd and State Rd on Sunday afternoon, leading to several people being hospitalized, including one with serious injuries. The incident was investigated by the Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers reported that Jadyn R. Bullinger, 20, of Van Wert, was driving a 2014 Chrysler 200 eastbound on State Rd when she failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection with Mendon Rd. Her vehicle entered the intersection, where it was struck on the right side by a 2009 Nissan Murano driven by Aireyona A. Thornsberry, 19, of Van Wert. Both vehicles came to rest on the right side of the roadway.
Middle Point EMS transported Ms. Bullinger to St. Rita’s Mercy Health for reported injuries. Ms. Thornsberry was also transported by Van Wert EMS to St. Rita’s Mercy Health, along with Tabatha A. Thornsberry, 36, a passenger in the Nissan. Chloe J. Morefield, 20, a passenger in the Chrysler, was airlifted by Lutheran Air Med Flight to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with serious injuries. Reports indicate that seatbelt usage by the occupants is under investigation.
Drug impairment is suspected to have been a factor for Ms. Bullinger. Agencies assisting on the scene included the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office, Van Wert EMS, Middle Point EMS, Superior Collision, Jim Schmidt Chevrolet, and Lutheran Air. The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with all those injured in this serious collision, and we hope for their full recovery.
Intersection Crashes in Ohio
Intersections, particularly those controlled by stop signs, are frequent sites of serious crashes in Ohio. Failing to yield, as reported in this case, is one of the leading causes of such accidents. The presence of multiple vehicles and passengers, coupled with suspected drug impairment, heightens the severity of these incidents and underscores the importance of safe driving practices.
Ohio law requires drivers to stop completely and yield to cross traffic at stop signs, especially at rural intersections like Mendon Rd and State Rd. Failing to adhere to these rules can result in devastating collisions and life-threatening injuries.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to emphasize the dangers of driving under the influence and the importance of wearing seatbelts. Ensuring compliance with these safety measures can save lives and prevent tragedies like this.
