Rochester, NY – Firefighter Injured Battling Blaze on Farbridge St

Posted by: Local Accident Reports on March 21, 2021

Rochester, NY (March 21, 2021) – A firefighter sustained injuries while putting out a fire in a vacant home on Farbridge Street on Sunday, March 21st.

At about 7:00 a.m., flames and smoke were reported coming from the home which was under construction. The responding fire crews requested an extra company because of the size of the fire, and the difficulty they were having getting into the building.

Due to the bare interior walls, the flames reached from the first floor all the way to the attic.

One of the firefighters sustained a leg injury while attempting to extinguish the blaze. He was transported via ambulance to Rochester General Hospital. He is expected to recover.

The Rochester Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit is still working to determine the cause of the fire.

Workplace Injuries in Rochester

An employee who is qualified to collect worker’s compensation benefits due to an injury they received while they were working is prevented from filing a suit against their employer for the same work-related injuries.

New York firefighters who endure injuries while in the line of duty, however, are not permitted to benefit from workers’ compensation. Their medical bills and lost wages are dealt with by their city of employment. This means that, because New York firefighters are not eligible to take advantage of the protections of worker’s compensation, they have the right to file a claim of personal injury against their employer for injuries caused by a line-of-duty accident in New York.
