Rock Island, WA (October 21, 2024) – A multi-vehicle accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, resulting in injuries to two individuals, including a 16-year-old passenger. The incident took place on October 19 around 12:31 p.m. near the intersection of Batterman Road and State Route 28.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash involved three vehicles. The first vehicle, which remains unidentified, turned east onto SR28 from Batterman Road, creating a hazardous situation for oncoming traffic. A second vehicle, traveling west on SR28, swerved to avoid a collision with the first vehicle but ended up colliding with a third vehicle that was stopped at the intersection, waiting to turn west.
The impact caused both the second and third vehicles to veer into a ditch, with the trailer of the second vehicle blocking Batterman Road. The driver of the first vehicle, responsible for initiating the crash, fled the scene heading east on SR28, making this a hit-and-run incident.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist those involved. Two individuals were transported to Central Washington Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Among the injured was Itati Montemejia, a 16-year-old from Rock Island, who was a passenger in the third vehicle. Fortunately, both injured parties were wearing seatbelts, which likely helped reduce the severity of their injuries.
The drivers of the second vehicle, identified as Christopher James, 53, from Cashmere, and the third vehicle, Adriana Montes, 43, from Rock Island, were unharmed. All individuals involved in the crash were reported to be wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.
The crash was attributed to the first vehicle’s failure to yield at the intersection. Authorities are actively investigating the incident and are working to locate the driver of the first vehicle, described as a white pickup truck, that fled the scene.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this unfortunate accident, and we hope for a swift recovery for all involved.
