Ruckersville, VA (May 6, 2023) – A box truck reported in Greene County claimed the life of 89-year-old Melvin Bond Sr.
The accident was reported at around 11:10 a.m. on May 4.
According to officials, a 2018 Freightliner box truck driven by 26-year-old Jordan Shelton was traveling west on Matthew Mill Road. For unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed over the center of the roadway and struck an eastbound 2008 Kia Rondo.
The box truck then ran off the right side of the roadway before overturning. The Kia came to rest in a ditch.
The driver of the Kia, identified as Bond, was fatally injured. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Shelton was injured and transported to UVA Medical Center for care. Shelton was subsequently arrested and charged with reckless driving for failure to maintain control.
The police are investigating the accident.
