Saint James, NY (August 7, 2025) – A 73-year-old man sustained serious injuries after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing an intersection in Saint James on Wednesday morning, according to Suffolk County police.
The crash occurred just after 9 a.m. at the intersection of Lake Ave and Railroad Ave. Authorities say Harold Day, a local resident, was walking north on Lake Ave when a 2010 Dodge Ram attempted a left turn from the southbound lane onto Railroad Ave and struck him in the crosswalk.
Paramedics responded quickly and transported Day to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries. His current condition has not been publicly disclosed.
The driver, a 52-year-old man from St. James, remained at the scene and was not injured in the crash. Police impounded the Dodge Ram for a standard safety inspection as part of the ongoing investigation.
Lake Ave and Railroad Ave were briefly restricted while emergency personnel cleared the area and collected evidence. Suffolk detectives are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Fourth Squad directly.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Day and his family and hope for a full and speedy recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in New York
Collisions involving pedestrians often result in severe injuries, especially when larger vehicles like pickup trucks are involved. In this Saint James incident, a left-turning driver hit a pedestrian already crossing the intersection—a situation that frequently leads to critical injuries due to limited driver visibility and timing misjudgments during turns.
The intersection of Lake Ave and Railroad Ave is a busy area in Suffolk County, frequently traveled by both pedestrians and local traffic. This type of crash raises ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety in mixed-use zones. Older adults, such as the 73-year-old victim in this case, are at even higher risk due to increased vulnerability and potential difficulty reacting quickly to approaching vehicles.
New York State law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, especially when making turns. However, these incidents still occur, often due to distracted driving, low visibility, or a failure to properly scan intersections. Even when pedestrians follow traffic laws, they remain susceptible to serious harm from inattentive drivers.
The vehicle involved was impounded for inspection, a standard step when injuries are serious. These checks can help determine whether mechanical issues contributed to the crash or whether the fault lies entirely with human error. For victims, understanding the causes can provide a clearer path toward medical, legal, and financial recovery.
If you or someone close to you has been affected by a pedestrian collision, don’t wait to seek guidance. Local resources can provide medical, emotional, and legal support during the recovery process. Staying informed and taking early steps can make all the difference.
