San Francisco, CA (February 10, 2025) – Six people were injured Sunday afternoon when an SUV crashed into the parklet of Napper Tandy’s Irish sports bar on 24th St in the Mission District, following a high-speed police chase. According to the San Francisco Police Department, all victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident began around 3:05 p.m. when San Francisco police officers responded to a burglary in progress at Buckingham Way and Winston Dr near Stonestown Mall. The suspects fled the scene in an SUV, leading police on a high-speed chase through city streets. The pursuit ended when the SUV collided with the parklet outside Napper Tandy’s.
Among the injured were a mother and daughter who were walking past the bar when they were struck. District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder, who was present at the scene, confirmed their involvement. Emergency responders quickly arrived to provide medical care, and all injured individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Two women from the suspect vehicle were arrested at the scene. The San Francisco Police Department continues to investigate the incident, including the circumstances leading up to the crash and the original burglary report.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
The Dangers of High-Speed Police Chases in Urban Areas
The crash on 24th St in San Francisco’s Mission District is a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-speed police chases in densely populated urban areas. While law enforcement officers have a duty to apprehend suspects, pursuits through busy neighborhoods can lead to unintended harm to innocent bystanders. In this case, the chase ended with an SUV plowing into a parklet, injuring six people, including pedestrians who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
High-speed chases pose significant dangers, particularly in areas like San Francisco, where narrow streets, heavy foot traffic, and public gathering spaces increase the risk of injury. Parklets, which have become popular outdoor dining spaces in the city, add another layer of vulnerability as they place patrons and pedestrians closer to street traffic. Incidents like this highlight the need for careful evaluation of pursuit protocols, balancing the need for public safety with the risks posed by high-speed chases.
Victims of such incidents often face a long road to recovery, not only from physical injuries but also from the emotional trauma of being caught in a violent event. Medical expenses, time off work, and the psychological impact of such accidents can create lasting challenges for those affected.
