Fire Safety and Alternative Heating Risks
House fires caused by alternative heating methods remain a concern, particularly during colder months when residents seek ways to stay warm in homes without functional heating systems. Devices like space heaters, wood stoves, and other non-electric heat sources can pose significant risks if not used properly or if safety guidelines are not followed.
Fire safety officials urge homeowners to:
- Ensure alternative heating sources are placed on stable, non-combustible surfaces and kept away from flammable materials.
- Install working smoke alarms on every floor of the home.
- Never leave heating equipment unattended or use them as a primary heating source for extended periods.
- Have backup heating solutions inspected regularly to ensure they function safely.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with alternative heating methods and highlights the importance of fire safety measures. Our thoughts are with Cheryl L. Peterson’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
