St. Louis, MO (August 6, 2025) – A five-vehicle collision on northbound Interstate 270 just south of the I-70 interchange left at least two people injured Tuesday afternoon, including one individual with serious injuries. The crash occurred around 3:48 p.m., leading to a substantial emergency response and significant traffic disruptions in the area.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, the crash began when the driver of a 2006 Mitsubishi box truck failed to maintain proper lookout and rear-ended a 2014 Toyota Highlander. The impact set off a chain reaction, pushing the Highlander into a 2014 Chevrolet Volt, which was then forced into a 2020 Toyota RAV4. A fifth vehicle, a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica, attempted to avoid the collision but struck the Volt during the chaos.
The driver of the Toyota Highlander, a 30-year-old man from O’Fallon, sustained serious injuries and was transported by Medic One to SSM Health DePaul Hospital. The driver of the box truck, a 40-year-old man from St. Louis, was also injured and taken by the Maryland Heights Fire Protection District to Mercy Hospital St. Louis with minor injuries. Several other drivers involved were wearing seat belts and declined transport, though two of the vehicles suffered total damage and had to be towed from the scene.
Traffic was heavily affected in the northbound lanes of I-270, with congestion extending through the late afternoon hours. Responding units included Missouri State Troopers, Maryland Heights and Bridgeton police, and local fire and EMS agencies who worked to stabilize the scene and investigate the crash.
We extend our thoughts to those injured and hope for a smooth recovery.
Highway Crashes in Missouri
The collision on I-270 near the I-70 junction underscores the ongoing dangers associated with congested highway travel in the St. Louis area. Interstate 270 is one of the most heavily trafficked beltways in the region, and rear-end crashes are particularly common due to sudden slowdowns, merging conflicts, and driver inattention.
Accidents involving multiple vehicles, like Tuesday’s crash, frequently lead to a ripple effect where each impacted car contributes to increased severity and risk of injury. In this case, failure to maintain proper lookout was cited as the initiating cause, a common factor in rear-end collisions on Missouri highways.
When highways are operating at capacity, a single lapse in attention can result in multi-vehicle pileups, especially in high-speed zones or near interchanges. These crashes not only cause physical harm but also impact daily commutes, emergency response efficiency, and roadway safety as a whole.
For those involved in such incidents, the road to recovery can include extensive medical treatment, insurance complications, and legal questions. It’s essential to have access to resources and guidance as early as possible to ensure proper care and support.
