St. Petersburg, FL (October 17, 2024) – A tragic accident involving a PSTA bus and a motorized scooter occurred on Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old man. The collision took place around 11:12 a.m. on 22nd Avenue North, where the bus was traveling westbound in the curb lane.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the bus began to cross from south to north when the man on the scooter attempted to cross the trail crosswalk. Unfortunately, the bus struck the scooter, leading to severe injuries for the victim. He was promptly transported to St. Petersburg Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
Investigators have indicated that the PSTA bus failed to yield to pedestrian traffic at the crosswalk, which is a critical factor in the ongoing investigation. Fortunately, none of the 10 passengers on the bus were injured during the incident.
