Stanton, NE (December 9, 2024) – Emergency responders were called to the scene of a one-vehicle crash on Highway 57, about four miles south of Stanton, Nebraska, on Sunday morning. The accident occurred at approximately 7:27 a.m. when a northbound vehicle, driven by 27-year-old Alejandro Reyes of Stanton, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a bridge guardrail.
The passenger in the vehicle, 30-year-old Jose Mandujano-Ceja, was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated using the "Jaws of Life" before being transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. Reyes was also taken to the hospital by ambulance with injuries. Following the crash, he was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) as a second-degree offense, careless driving, and having an open alcoholic liquor container in the vehicle. Mandujano-Ceja was also cited for the open container violation.
Emergency responders from Stanton County Fire and Rescue, Pilger Fire and Rescue, and Leigh Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene to provide assistance. Stanton County Emergency Management helped with the investigation. A LifeNet helicopter was initially en route but was later canceled. The Nebraska Department of Transportation remained on-site until 11:00 a.m. to address the damage to the bridge approach.
