Staten Island, NY (March 19, 2025) – Several people were injured Tuesday evening when a van crashed into a laundromat in Staten Island’s Mariner’s Harbor neighborhood.
According to FDNY officials, the incident occurred just before 7:00 p.m. at 158 South Avenue. Reports indicate that the 65-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, jumped the curb, struck a power line, and then barreled through the front of the laundromat.
Emergency responders transported the driver to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, where he remains in critical condition. Six other individuals who were inside the laundromat at the time of the crash were also taken to the hospital. Fortunately, their injuries are not considered life-threatening, and they are expected to recover.
The New York City Buildings Department has confirmed that the crash caused structural damage to a front column of the business. The agency has ordered the building owner to hire an engineer to assess the damage and report back with further findings.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the victims, and we hope for a full recovery for all those affected.
Vehicle-Into-Building Crashes in New York
Crashes where vehicles collide with buildings pose serious risks not only to the driver but also to pedestrians, employees, and patrons inside the structure. These accidents often result from medical emergencies, driver impairment, mechanical failures, or loss of control due to speed or road conditions.
Busy commercial areas, such as laundromats and storefronts, are particularly vulnerable to these types of incidents. When a vehicle crashes into a building, there is also the potential for structural damage, power outages, and fire hazards, further increasing the risk of injuries.
In cases like this, injured victims may have legal options to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and other damages. Holding negligent drivers accountable is an important step in ensuring public safety and preventing future incidents.
