Staten Island, NY (December 23, 2022) – Two children, ages five and six, tragically lost their lives in a major house fire that also left four other children injured. The incident happened at around 10:20 a.m. on Friday morning.
Authorities say that a duplex located on Van Duzer Street in the Grymes Hill neighborhood of Staten Island caught fire for unknown reasons. Heavy flames engulfed the entire second story of the structure, and emergency crews were immediately called to the scene to battle the blaze and assist those involved.
At the scene, crews located a total of six children inside the home and immediately removed them from the structure. A five-year-old girl was pronounced deceased at the scene, and a six-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Four other children were also injured in the fire. A five-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy are reportedly in critical condition. A 14-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl sustained less severe injuries. Few other details have been reported at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Deadly Residential Fires in New York
A national average of around 2.5 deaths and 9.8 injuries per 1,000 residential fires was reported in 2018, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Throughout New York state, fatalities triggered by residential fires rose by no less than 50% between the years 2016 and 2017. Data also shows that during the same year, a total of 73 civilian fatalities were the consequences of serious residential fires in New York. Tragically, such overwhelming events often leave victims and their loved ones with severe pain and suffering by no fault of their own.
After losing a loved one in a careless, reckless, or otherwise negligent New York accident by no fault of the victim, it may feel like no amount of compensation could make you feel complete again. While it is true that no financial restitution can ever fully make up for your losses, filing a wrongful death claim against the responsible party or parties can go a long way toward helping you find some semblance of peace again.
