Virginia Auto Accidents
In 2017, 843 people died in fatal car accidents in Virginia. This number marks a rise in the state’s annual vehicular death rate of 10.8% from the previous year. An additional 65,000 car accident victims sustained varying degrees of accident-related injuries.
Although fatal car accident totals are extraordinarily high throughout the United States, especially when weighed against totals from other high-income countries, Virginia falls relatively low on the list. Interestingly, the top three factors responsible for fatal car accidents that year in Virginia were the same three main contributors to fatal accidents nationwide.
Speeding was instrumental in 37.7% of the Commonwealth’s vehicular fatalities. Drivers who were under the influence had a hand in 29.4% of the deadly accidents that took place on Virginia’s roadways, and 52% were attributed to people who neglected to use child safety restraints or a seat belt.
