Sterling, AK (September 13, 2023) – A tragic accident claimed the lives of a 30-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy on Friday, September 8, 2023. 

Sherika Hatten of Soldotna, driving a black 2008 Toyota Corolla, veered into oncoming traffic near mile 57 on Sterling Highway. 

Around 1:30 p.m., she collided head-on with a northbound concrete mixer truck. 

The impact forced the truck down an embankment beside the Kenai River. 

Hatten and the toddler died at the crash site, while the truck driver remained unharmed.

Environmental teams addressed vehicle fluid spills near the river. 

The investigation is still ongoing.
