Superior Twp, MI (May 14, 2025) – A tragic collision involving a wrong-way driver and a semi-truck claimed one life late Monday night on M-14 near Vorhies Rd in Superior Township. The May 12 crash occurred just after 11:00 p.m. and is currently under investigation by Michigan State Police.
Authorities report that a 26-year-old man from Whitmore Lake was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of M-14 in a 2009 Acura MDX when he collided head-on with an oncoming semi-truck. The violent impact killed the wrong-way driver at the scene. He was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel shortly after their arrival.
The semi-truck driver, a 25-year-old man from Ontario, suffered minor injuries and was treated on-site. He did not require hospitalization.
Michigan State Police indicated that both alcohol and drugs appear to have played a role in the crash. Toxicology reports and further investigation are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wish the semi-truck driver a full and speedy recovery.
Impaired Driving and Wrong-Way Crashes in Michigan
Wrong-way driving collisions are among the most severe and catastrophic incidents on highways, often resulting in fatalities or life-altering injuries. On limited-access freeways like M-14, high speeds and limited reaction time leave little margin for survival when vehicles collide head-on. Sadly, this crash near Vorhies Rd follows a tragic pattern seen too often across Michigan and the United States.
According to data from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, wrong-way crashes—while relatively rare—are significantly more deadly than other types of highway collisions. In many cases, impairment due to alcohol or drugs is a major contributing factor. Late-night and early-morning hours, like the 11:05 p.m. timeframe in this crash, are especially high-risk periods for impaired and wrong-way driving.
The repercussions of such crashes extend far beyond the moment of impact. Families lose loved ones, survivors face lifelong trauma, and first responders are left grappling with preventable tragedy. For truck drivers and other innocent motorists caught in these events, even minor injuries can evolve into long-term challenges involving recovery, insurance complications, and emotional distress.
Preventive measures—like increased DUI enforcement, clearer signage, and public awareness campaigns—are crucial in reducing these incidents. Still, no policy or sign can undo the damage once a crash occurs.
