Syracuse, NY (May 8, 2023) – A Liverpool man is in police custody after stealing a car and crashing it into a Centro Bus Shelter, injuring three people.
Around 2:58 p.m. on May 8th, two Syracuse police officers were on patrol in the 300 block of Burt Street when they noticed a white Jeep Wrangler, which had been reported stolen, driving towards them. One officer got out of the patrol car and instructed the driver, 20-year-old Ejarias Burgin, to stop. Instead, Burgin put the vehicle in reverse, driving at high speed, and crashed into a bus shelter occupied by several people.
The stolen Jeep continued in reverse, crossing over a curb and through a tree before Burgin eventually collided with another tree. He then fled the scene on foot but was caught shortly after by the police.
Three people in the bus shelter were injured as a result of the crash and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. They are currently in stable condition.
Burgin has been arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including reckless endangerment, possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and criminal mischief. He has been taken into custody at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
The Syracuse Police Department Criminal Investigations Division is urging anyone with information to come forward.
We wish the three injured parties a quick recovery.
