Tallahassee, FL (December 4, 2024) – A young man is facing multiple charges after allegedly injuring two people in a hit-and-run accident and then injuring an officer while attempting to flee the scene. George Geanopulos, 20, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence (DUI), hit and run, eluding police, possession of a fraudulent driver’s license, and resisting an officer without violence. He is currently being held at the Leon County Detention Facility.
According to Heather Merritt, a spokesperson for the Tallahassee Police Department, the incident began just after 1 a.m. when officers responded to a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Lorene Street and West Madison Street. The crash involved another vehicle and resulted in non-life-threatening injuries. Officers quickly located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but Geanopulos immediately crashed into a curb and attempted to flee the scene.
In his attempt to escape, Geanopulos accelerated his vehicle and crashed into an officer's car, which was attempting to safely block the suspect’s car and prevent him from escaping. The collision caused disabling damage to the officer’s vehicle, and the officer sustained minor injuries in the process.
Geanopulos’s reckless actions have led to serious charges, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the event. The individuals involved in the initial hit-and-run incident suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but the officer's minor injuries further highlight the dangers of fleeing from police.
