Texas County, MO (May 13, 2025) – A serious crash involving two vehicles occurred Saturday evening on MO Route 17, approximately six miles northwest of Summersville, resulting in injuries to an 18-year-old driver and a teenage passenger. The incident was investigated by Trooper B. A. Swink of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Authorities report that the driver of a 2004 Pontiac GTO was traveling southbound on MO-17 when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound 2004 Chevrolet 2500. The 18-year-old male driver of the Pontiac, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries. He was transported by life flight to Cox Hospital in Springfield for emergency care. A 16-year-old female passenger in the same vehicle sustained minor injuries. She was wearing a seat belt and was taken by Texas County EMS to Mercy Hospital in Rolla.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 28-year-old man from Mountain Grove, was wearing a seat belt and was able to drive his vehicle away from the scene. He did not report injuries.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims, and we hope for their full and speedy recovery.
Head-On Crashes and Rural Road Risks in Missouri
Rural highways like MO-17 in Texas County often appear quiet, but they carry a high risk of serious accidents, especially when drivers lose control or drift across centerlines. Saturday’s crash near Summersville is a clear example of how quickly these situations can escalate, with one vehicle overturning and resulting in multiple injuries, including a life flight emergency.
Factors such as driver inexperience, lack of safety belt use, and overcorrection often contribute to high-severity crashes in rural areas. In this incident, the young driver of the Pontiac was seriously injured after his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and then overturned. Such crashes not only endanger those in the at-fault vehicle but also pose serious risks to other drivers sharing the road.
Seat belt usage continues to be a key factor in injury outcomes. The teenage passenger, who was buckled in, suffered only minor injuries, while the unrestrained driver required airlift transport. This difference underscores the life-saving importance of proper restraint use, especially among young drivers and passengers.
Accidents in rural Missouri can also pose challenges in terms of response time and access to trauma care. Fortunately, in this case, timely EMS and air medical response ensured both injured parties received appropriate treatment.
Victims of serious crashes often face more than just physical recovery—they may also have to navigate medical bills, insurance claims, and emotional trauma. It’s essential for those affected to understand their rights and explore resources available to assist them during recovery.
