Thibodaux, LA (May 9, 2025) – A high-speed collision involving four vehicles resulted in the death of a Thibodaux man on Wednesday night in Lafourche Parish. Louisiana State Police Troop C responded to the incident, which occurred shortly before 9:00 p.m. on May 7 along Louisiana Highway 308 near Olivia Drive.
Emergency responders from Lafourche Parish Fire and EMS rushed to the scene, where they found a heavily damaged 2014 Kia Optima that had collided with multiple vehicles. Paramedics provided aid to several individuals at the scene, but 36-year-old Isaiah Thomas, who was driving the Kia, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on site. Authorities confirmed Thomas was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
According to the initial investigation, a Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s deputy had attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Thomas, who was wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation. Thomas fled northbound on LA Hwy 308 at high speed, prompting a short pursuit that was ultimately called off by the deputy before the crash occurred.
After the pursuit ended, Thomas continued northbound and attempted to illegally pass a 2024 Nissan Frontier in a no-passing zone. During the maneuver, he collided head-on with a southbound 2021 Honda Accord, then sideswiped the Frontier and a southbound 2023 Ford F-150.
All drivers involved, other than Thomas, were wearing seat belts. The driver of the Honda Accord sustained minor injuries, while the other drivers were reportedly unharmed. Toxicology samples were collected from Thomas and submitted for analysis, and the other drivers voluntarily participated in standard testing procedures. The crash remains under investigation by state police.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to those affected by this tragic event.
Multi-Vehicle Collisions and Pursuit-Involved Crashes in Louisiana
Wednesday night’s four-vehicle collision in Lafourche Parish underscores the heightened risks associated with reckless driving and unauthorized pursuits. Though the active pursuit had been called off prior to the crash, the sequence of events leading up to the impact illustrates how fleeing behavior, even briefly, can create catastrophic conditions for both the fleeing driver and innocent motorists.
In this case, Isaiah Thomas was reportedly fleeing at high speed when he attempted to pass another vehicle in a clearly marked no-passing zone. Such violations significantly increase the likelihood of head-on collisions, especially on rural highways like LA 308, where curves and limited lighting can reduce visibility.
The fact that Thomas was not wearing a seat belt further compounded the severity of his injuries. Louisiana State Police consistently emphasize the lifesaving importance of seat belt use, particularly in high-impact crashes involving multiple vehicles and heavy traffic zones.
Multi-vehicle collisions like this one also create logistical challenges for emergency crews, as they must secure expansive crash scenes, assess several individuals for injuries, and coordinate toxicology testing for legal and medical purposes. This incident involved four separate vehicles and required a large-scale response to ensure safety and evidence preservation.
Law enforcement agencies in Louisiana often review procedures after any crash involving prior pursuit, even if the pursuit was terminated. These evaluations aim to improve safety for both officers and the public, while reinforcing policies that prioritize lives over apprehension in non-violent cases.
Families affected by such tragic events often find themselves facing emotional, legal, and financial uncertainty. In situations involving multiple vehicles, determining liability and navigating claims can be especially complex. Victims and their loved ones are encouraged to seek support and reliable information about their rights and next steps.
