Transit Township, MN (January 14, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 19 near 501st Ave in Transit Township, Sibley County, Monday afternoon. The accident occurred around 3:39 PM and involved a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu.

Both vehicles were traveling westbound on Highway 19 when they collided near 501st Ave. The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, identified as Stephanie Lynn Fehring, 39, of Winthrop, MN, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Ridgeview Hospital for treatment. The Equinox carried four juvenile passengers, none of whom reported injuries or required transportation to a medical facility. All passengers in the Equinox were confirmed to be wearing seat belts, though the driver was not.

The Chevrolet Malibu was driven by a 17-year-old male from Fairfax, MN, who was uninjured. Airbags deployed in the Malibu, but the Equinox’s airbags did not activate.

First responders from Sibley County Sheriff’s Office, Gaylord Police Department, and Winthrop EMS were quick to arrive at the scene, ensuring safety and providing necessary medical assessments. Authorities reported that the road conditions were dry at the time of the crash, and no alcohol involvement was noted. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Car Accidents in Minnesota

Collisions on Minnesota highways often occur due to a combination of traffic volume, driver behavior, and challenging road configurations. Highway 19, a key route through Sibley County, is no exception. Intersections and stretches with mixed traffic speeds can increase the likelihood of accidents.

State data indicates that Sibley County experiences its share of vehicle collisions, with incidents often involving multiple passengers, as seen in this case. Wearing seat belts remains one of the most effective measures for reducing injury severity during crashes. Minnesota law mandates seat belt use for all passengers, highlighting its critical role in safety.

The quick actions of local EMS and law enforcement in this incident minimized harm and ensured swift medical evaluation for those involved. This accident is a reminder for drivers to stay alert, follow traffic rules, and maintain safe distances, particularly on high-traffic routes.
