Tucson, AZ (October 19, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early on October 17, resulting in the death of a woman in midtown Tucson. At approximately 5:30 AM, officers responded to reports of a vehicle collision in the 1400 block of North Alvernon Way, where a car had collided with a utility pole, leading to a significant fire at an adjacent apartment complex.
The vehicle involved was a maroon Chevrolet Equinox, driven by a 71-year-old man who sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His passenger, 35-year-old Andrea Christine Wasson, was also taken to the hospital but suffered life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, Wasson succumbed to her injuries on October 18.
The incident prompted emergency responders to evacuate several residences in the apartment complex as Tucson Fire Department (TFD) worked to extinguish the fire, which had ignited on the roof of the building due to arcing power lines from the damaged utility pole. The collision caused significant damage, affecting four apartments and displacing three families.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Chevrolet was traveling south on Alvernon Way when it veered off the roadway for reasons that are still under investigation. The driver’s failure to control speed and unsafe movement on the roadway are noted as contributing factors to this tragic incident.
