Unicoi, TN – Three Injured in Rollover Crash on I-26 Near Mile Marker 30

May 18, 2025

Unicoi, TN (May 18, 2025) – A serious collision involving two vehicles led to three people sustaining injuries Saturday morning on Interstate 26 in Unicoi. The incident occurred at approximately 8:09 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 30, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP).

First responders, including paramedics, assessed and treated individuals hurt in the crash. The collision began when a 2007 Honda Civic traveling in the left lane attempted to change lanes and struck a 2015 Mazda 3. The impact caused the Mazda to enter an uncontrolled spin.

Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The Civic overturned and rolled several times before both vehicles came to rest side by side in the middle of the eastbound lanes. Emergency crews quickly secured the scene to aid the injured and restore traffic safety.

According to THP’s report, the driver of the Mazda and a passenger were injured and were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The driver of the Civic, who was also injured and wearing a seat belt, was charged with driving on a suspended license and a financial responsibility violation.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine any additional contributing factors.

Lane Change Risks and Rollovers on Tennessee Highways

High-speed lane changes on interstate highways like I-26 are among the most common causes of multi-vehicle crashes in Tennessee. These maneuvers require precise timing, full awareness of surrounding traffic, and clear signaling. When misjudged, lane changes can lead to sideswipes, rear-end impacts, and even catastrophic rollovers, particularly when involving compact cars like the Honda Civic.

Data from the Tennessee Department of Safety highlights that rollover accidents account for a disproportionately high rate of injury severity, often due to vehicle instability or loss of control after initial impact. In this case, the Civic’s rollover underscores the dangers of high-speed interactions between vehicles in closely packed traffic.

Drivers are urged to double-check blind spots, use signals consistently, and avoid abrupt maneuvers, especially in tight freeway conditions. Vehicles that attempt lane changes without verifying a clear path significantly increase the risk of injury for all road users.

The presence of safety equipment, such as seat belts, likely prevented more serious outcomes in Saturday’s crash. This reinforces the importance of always buckling up, regardless of driving distance or speed.
