Verdi Township, MN (October 21, 2024) – A traffic accident occurred in Verdi Township on October 20, 2024, at approximately 5:44 p.m. The incident took place on Highway 14 at milepost 4, involving a semi-truck and a Honda vehicle.
According to reports, a 2018 Kenworth semi-truck, driven by 26-year-old Josef Jacobus Vandermerwe of Volga, was traveling westbound on Highway 14. At the same time, a 2017 Honda RTL, operated by 71-year-old Fathi Taha Halaweish from Brookings, was also traveling westbound on the same highway. The semi-truck was attempting to make a right turn onto 145th Avenue when it collided with the Honda, resulting in a variety of injuries.
Emergency responders from Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Lake Benton Fire Department, and Tyler Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Mr. Halaweish sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Brookings Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Fortunately, Mr. Vandermerwe did not suffer any injuries and did not require medical attention.
