Draper, VA (August 06, 2020) – Troopers from the Virginia State Police reported to the scene of a fatal multi-vehicle collision that occurred in southwest Virginia on the evening of Wednesday, August 5th.

According to details gleaned from a local news source, the accident took place at about 5:15 p.m. along Interstate 81 near the county line between Wythe County and Pulaski County.

Six different vehicles, a mix of cars and tractor-trailers, collided with one another near mile marker 87.7.

An announcement made by state troopers at the scene of the accident confirmed that two fatalities resulted from the multi-vehicle collision, which occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81.

In a statement issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation, as of Thursday morning at approximately 5:40 a.m., just over 12 hours after the deadly incident took place, morning commuter traffic was still backed up for almost nine miles.

The Accident Reconstruction Team from the Wytheville Division of the Virginia State Police along with the Motor Carrier Safety Team reported to the crash site in order to aid troopers in the continuing investigation into the crash.
