Washington County, IA (December 9, 2024) – Two individuals have died following a high-speed chase that ended in a fatal head-on collision on Highway 218 in Washington County on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 4:00 p.m. near mile marker 78, south of Riverside.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the driver of a 2021 Nissan Rogue was being pursued by law enforcement while driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway. The Rogue collided head-on with a 2017 Ford Explorer that was traveling in the correct direction. The driver of the Rogue was killed instantly in the crash, and despite efforts from emergency responders, the driver of the Explorer was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the victims have not been released, and investigators are still working to determine what initiated the police pursuit. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but both vehicles sustained significant damage from the violent impact.
